Devotional Reading: Exodus 32:7-14

Central Verse:
"Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us." -Romans 8:34 KJV

"Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died - more than that, who raised to life - is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us." - Romans 8:34 NIV

Definition of intercession
Intercession is prayer or petition in favor of someone else.

Why are we to be intercessors?
Every believer should have a life of prayer. The believer's relationship should afford him the privilege to get in touch with God for himself as well as to be able to pray effectively to God on behalf of others, such as families, friends, other believers, pastors, and our leaders on every level. The believer should have the love and compassion to be able to intercede for others in every situation.

You can't make an extreme commitment to God if you haven't committed a prayer life. God desires us to communicate with Him. Communication is key in every relationship. Prayer helps us maintain relationship and keep it in tact.

We have to change the mentality that prayer is a long drawn out process or difficult. Prayer is an attitude! It takes the attitude of prayer and commitment to build your relationship. We as intercessors must have confidence that God will turn it around, have mercy, and make a way.

Regardless of any denomination, prayer is important. Unified prayer bombards Heaven as one voice and allows God to move. You have to be careful not to take credit when God moves. You can not think that it was just your prayer that did it. Someone else could be praying for the same thing. We just have to pray and be humble. Sometimes as you intercede, it will draw you to compassion and tears.

Examples of Intercession in the Word

Ezra (Ezra 9:5-15) - Ezra was one of the prophets who emphasized the hope, revival, reform, and restoration for God's people after their exile in Babylon. He was very passionate and loyal to God and His Word. Ezra prayed to God "our iniquities" and "our trespasses", he included himself and not just what the people had done.

Moses (Exodus 32:1-14) - After all God had done for Israel, they yet refused to live righteous and obey His laws. Because of the people's apostasy and sin, God declared His intentions to destroy them and raise up another nation through Moses; but because Moses' intense prayer to God on behalf of the people, God changed His mind.

True intercessory seeks God's Glory, not our own.

Daniel Chapter 9 is a model prayer for intercession.

Who is the greatest intercessor and why?
Jesus. He stands in the gaps for us and takes our prayer to the Father.
Because Jesus is the greatest intercessor, each believer can be an intercessor.

Groups of people we should be interceding for:
1 Timothy 2:2

  1. Our Government and nations
  2. Church Leadership
  3. Special needs - poor, orphaned, homeless, widows/widowers, sick
  4. Family, neighbors, and friends, enemies
  5. Against Strongholds - drugs, sexual immorality, habits, racism, gangs, prostitution, etc.
  6. Sinners
  7. Workplace - boss, coworkers, employers
  8. Local Church
  9. Military & Missions
  10. Community
SO MANY MORE AREAS WE CAN FOCUS ON
